About Us

Reaching New Levels of Excellence

Founded in 1869 and chartered as the state’s first medical college in 1881, we became part of the University of Nebraska in 1902. Today, our education programs train more health professionals than any other institution in the state.

Our scientists and clinicians are at the leading edge of discovering new medical breakthroughs, transforming lives across the state and around the world.

Led by Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., UNMC offers the full range of academic health sciences programs through its 6 colleges, 2 degree-granting institutes and Graduate Studies, serving more than 4,400 students in about 90 programs.  Our physician assistant program was recently ranked ninth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and our primary care program was ranked 17. The university’s  physical therapy, pharmacy and public health programs also are ranked among the top in the country.  With a goal to educate physicians in a high-quality environment, we offer nearly 70 residency and fellowship programs and train more than 600 house officers.

Our medical faculty practice through our primary clinical partner Nebraska Medicine, which has hospitals in Omaha and Bellevue, as well as about 40 ambulatory clinics throughout the Omaha metropolitan area. We also work closely with the Omaha VA and Madonna Rehabilitation. You'll find services in nearly 50 specialties, including cancer, neuroscience and heart science.

Culture

Together, through experience and a no-nonsense, can-do approach, our leaders are creating a more vibrant academic health science center and a stronger economy for all Nebraskans.

Led by Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, this diverse group represents all corners of the United States and the world. Our leaders ensure that UNMC’s research, education and patient care rank among the best. Through collaboration and strategic goals, we face and conquer challenges like Ebola, COVID-19, nursing shortages and next-generation medical education through cutting-edge simulation.

Each of our campus sites is its own community, connected to a greater community. UNMC’s divisions across the state are bonded through a shared culture – and in real time, by distance-learning technology: Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff-Gering.

Diversity

UNMC creates an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion for all our faculty, staff and students. Our goal is an inclusive campus environment where every individual feels welcomed, valued and supported.

We provide training and development opportunities for all to cultivate the skills needed to effectively engage, communicate and collaborate with others across differences.
