The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. The Sociology Department in the School of Humanities and Sciences aims to understand and address pressing empirical questions around social issues that affect everything from interpersonal relations to broad challenges like global warming, through cutting-edge research and teaching. The department houses about 20 faculty members, 75 graduate students, 30 undergraduates, and 8 staff members.

The mission of the Program in Urban Studies is to develop undergraduate students' understanding of the nature of cities and their impact on our world. The Department of Sociology is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to partner with the department faculty and staff to achieve continued growth and preeminence in research and teaching. Reporting to the Chair of Sociology, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration at H&S, the DFO will provide management oversight and direction for the operations, administration, and finances for the department. As the partner to the Chair, this critical leadership position will ensure sound management of the department and work with the Chair and faculty leaders on new and continuing educational programming and initiatives to enable the department to achieve its mission. Additionally, the DFO serves as the liaison to the school and university for administrative business matters for the department and partners with subject matter experts throughout the university to make recommendations and decisions as needed.

As the administrative leader for the department, the DFO provides leadership and direction for all administrative functions, including budgeting and financial management of approximately $10 million, planning for teaching and course offerings, student services, events, programming for the departmental community, facilities, property management, and space planning, information security, compliance, and safety. The DFO manages department operations, establishes the administration's organizational structure and environment, and has oversight of administrative policies and procedures in the department. In addition, the DFO oversees a team of nine staff, directly supervising five, and performs tasks ranging from human resources to financial planning to faculty affairs.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing position exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

In this role you will:

• Manage staff in the day-to-day operations for functional area(s) of responsibility. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. Ensure work completion within schedule and constraints.

• May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.

• Evaluate business processes and operational and/or financial effectiveness. Analyze and resolve complex issues and provide alternative solutions as necessary. May lead process improvement for immediate unit.

• Analyze unit needs and make recommendations to leadership for changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and/or administrative functions. Work with the Chair and/or Dean's Office regarding resources to support faculty activities and interests.

• Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies and procedures within an operating unit. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures.

• Manage the finances across all sources for the annual budget, including developing, monitoring, analyzing, forecasting and reporting.

• Manage and coordinate grants and contracts for the department. Ensure compliance with institutional and external requirements.

• Represent the unit's business and academic operations within the organization/school.

• Manage student and faculty program administration for their unit.
