Job Summary:
The Controller/Finance Manager is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the corporation and overseeing all departments that support internal functions. The Controller/Finance Manager will be responsible for managing all accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance to ensure the company’s financial health and operational efficiency. This role requires a strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, and financial management within the construction industry. The Controller/Finance Manager reports to the Owner.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversee and perform detailed general ledger reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
Manage and file sales and use tax returns for multi-jurisdictional contracting projects, including research and resolution of tax discrepancies.
Supervise and mentor administrative team, providing guidance, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities to build a high-performing team.
Collaborate with project accounting team to ensure proper accrual and payment of sales/use/gross receipts taxes
Provide pre-construction team with preliminary jurisdictional tax information for project bidding.
State and local tax licensing administration, ensuring compliance with jurisdictional requirements and timely renewals.
Manage and ensure compliance with multi-state payroll tax regulations, including proper setup and reporting.
Administer worker’s compensation and insurance audit reporting, ensuring accurate documentation and resolution of discrepancies.
Prepare consolidated financial statements, including performing intercompany account reconciliations and ensuring accuracy across entities.
Support financial reporting processes for government contracts, ensuring compliance with FAR, GAAP, and other applicable regulations.
Apply a solid understanding of corporate taxation and tax accounting under GAAP to ensure accurate and compliant tax reporting.
Manage job cost and equipment revenue accounting.
Participate in internal and external audits, ensuring the availability and accuracy of required documentation.
Engage with all levels of the organization to provide financial insights, support decision-making, and address inquiries.
Represent the company to external entities, including auditors, tax authorities, and regulatory bodies, with professionalism and expertise.
Continuously improve accounting processes and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Ability to create, document, and communicate accounting information, processes, and procedures.

Master's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience (MBA in Finance and a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant preferred).
CPA or equivalent designation is a plus.
CCIFP certification is a plus.
10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the engineering, construction, or contracting industry; preferred experience within the construction industry with 50m+ annual revenue.
Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, consolidated financials, and corporate taxation.
Demonstrated expertise in sales and use tax compliance and regulations for government contracting businesses.
Experience managing state and local tax licensing administration and renewals.
Ability to document and effectively communicate accounting compliance and procedural guidelines to all levels of the organization.
Familiarity with government contracting, FAR, and related compliance requirements.
Knowledge of worker’s compensation and insurance audit processes.
Proficiency in accounting & construction specific software (Viewpoint Spectrum, Vista, Procore) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Strong understanding of tax accounting under GAAP and its application in corporate taxation.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels and effectively and professionally represent the company to external entities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP) and Microsoft Excel.
