This position is based out of Minneapolis, MN and is eligible for hybrid work-from-home and/or on-campus work dependent upon individual performance and organizational need. Because the University of Minnesota is a land-grant institution that serves the state, residing in Minnesota is typically required.
Job Responsibilities:
40% Research/Contract Accounting Support and Analysis:
Provides financial support to PI over the life of the grant or contract. Develops assigned project budgets, which includes preparing forms and instructions; compiling and auditing data; analyzing requests and providing funding recommendations; and/or performing other related activities.
Monitors and analyzes accounts or grants for compliance with financial, reporting, and legal requirements, interprets grant and contract regulations and their relation to university policies and procedures, proactively identify areas of concern and recommends solutions. Monitors expenses and revenue, including labor distribution. Ensure effort certification is completed by PI and meets all deadlines. Ensure grants are closed out properly with Sponsored Financial Reporting (SFR) and issues are resolved with Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA).
Prepares, reviews, and analyzes a variety of reports, accounts, reconciliations, and/or statements to and from internal departments and external agencies.
30% Financial Analysis:
Prepares detailed and complex financial analysis for assigned grants and sponsored/non-sponsored accounts utilizing historical data; identifies gaps between predicted revenue and expenses, and recommends a course of action based on financial, statistical and operational information. Prepares, reviews, and analyzes a variety of reports, accounts, reconciliations, schedules, tables, and/or statements to and from internal departments, for the Medical School, and external agencies.
Monitors and performs general and subsidiary ledger reconciliations, which includes preparing and entering journal entries for various recurring activities, adjustments and corrections; and analyzing and resolving accounting issues. These are reported at a certain time interval and identify risks and opportunities within the area being analyzed. Ad hoc reporting is also required as requested.
Provides data and recommendations to managers regarding account and/or fund balances, budgeting practices and accounting functions. Coordinates activities with project leaders, financial staff, and outside agencies.
30% Non-sponsored:
Develops assigned department budgets, which includes preparing forms & instructions; compiling & auditing data; analyzing requests & providing funding recommendations; &/or, performing other related activities.
Monitors and analyzes accounts and funds for compliance with financial, reporting, and legal requirements, interprets contract regulations and their relation to University policies and procedures, identifies areas of concern and recommends solutions. Research discrepancies in accounting data which includes preparing for internal and external audits and analyzing a variety of fiscal data from multiple departments and/or colleges.
Maintains the integrity of accounting systems and the chart of accounts; establishes new accounts, deletes obsolete accounts, monitors systems for compliance w/GASB policies and procedures; and performs other related tasks.
Completes a variety of accounting functions, which includes capitalizing assets, reconciling balance sheets and accounts; transferring funds; setting up new accounts; monitoring fund balances; approving payment vouchers; entry of departmental deposit; reconciling & approving P-Card transactions; & preparing status reports. Activities involve data from three departments.
Provides data and recommendations to managers regarding account and/or fund balances, budgeting practices and accounting functions. Coordinates activities with project leaders, financial staff, and outside agencies.
Salary Range: $67,933 to $83,783 annually; actual starting salary is dependent on experience and qualifications and is anticipated to begin at $70,034 to $76,907 annually.

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS plus at least four years of professional work experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage priorities, coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously, and meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively to financial and non-financial audiences, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications:

Strong technical, problem solving and process improvement skills
Analytical skills, ability to gather, organize and present data in a meaningful way
Experience managing finances for units with diverse funding sources to include forecasting, analysis, budgeting, and complex reporting.
Experience with federal granting agencies to include budgeting
Familiarity with University systems such as PeopleSoft HRMS, EFS, UM Analytics, ECRT and EGMS
Current UMN Certified Approver or ability to obtain certification within 12-months of employment.
