IBES invites applications for a Professor of the Practice full-time faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2024 (or sooner if schedules permit). We seek individuals with professional and/or academic experience in sustainable finance & investing, including areas such as cleantech, carbon markets, climate finance, and ESG. In this portfolio of programming, IBES will be working closely with the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which has created a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem across the university since its founding in 2016.
Strong candidates will have demonstrated expertise across the policy to implementation continuum, and will bring a large network of relevant partners to enrich our academic and research programming. The successful candidate will work closely with the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, and will serve as Academic Director for IBES' program in "Sustainable Investing and Finance", which is slated for continued growth and development in IBES' new Strategic Plan.
Near-term priorities for IBES' Sustainable Investing and Finance programming include:
Support continued instruction of two successful IBES courses currently taught by Adjunct Faculty (ENVS 1545: Sustainable Investing and ENVS 1547: Finance and the Environment)
Design at least one additional undergraduate course to complement the two existing courses
Work with Brown's CareerLab to develop a suite of student internship offerings in the area of sustainable investing and finance
Design and execute IBES events (in person and online) that complement our academic and research programming in this area, leveraging the extensive network of Brown alumni working in this area
In general, Professors of the Practice enhance Brown's pedagogical mission through qualifications and experience that are earned primarily through professional, rather than scholarly, activities. Professors of the Practice are appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level based on their professional and/or academic experience and their teaching/advising experience. Appointments are initially made for one year, and are reviewed and renewed for periods of up to five years, typically on the anniversary date of the prior appointment. Professors of the Practice will typically teach four courses per year in addition to advising students, with the possibility that non-teaching leadership roles may serve in lieu of one or more such courses if mutually agreed.
Professors of the Practice are expected to maintain involvement in practice. This may include continued industry engagement, academic research, new venture creation/funding, administrative service/ leadership roles in support of the university or some combination of such activities. Professors of the Practice are not eligible for sabbatical, scholarly leave, or tenure. Professors of the Practice can become voting members of the IBES faculty following nomination by the Chair and a successful faculty vote.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to the commitment of IBES and the University. Accordingly, IBES seeks qualified candidates who can contribute to equity, diversity and inclusion through service, mentorship, teaching and scholarship.
