This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.
The Principal Financial Manager directs Ophthalmology's fiscal unit. Functions as chief advisor to the Administrative Vice Chair (ACV) and Chair on financial matters. Responsible for the daily management and operation of the Ophthalmology faculty compensation plan, and all sponsored project matters including interpretation of University funding agencies, and internal policies with regard to the assessment, administration, allocation, and appropriate use of financial resources ($20 million in sponsored project, gift and various donor funds). Responsible for the development of appropriate internal controls for fiscal administration in the Department. Provides management and direction on financial issues pertaining to all Ophthalmology funds. Oversight, development, and maintenance of all financial controls regarding post-award contract and grant administration. Ensures that all department practices and fiscal policies and procedures meet university, agency, audit, and department guidelines.
Uses advanced professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Contacts are both internal and external to the department at all levels.
Eleven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Advanced degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training
Advanced knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
Ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources.
Advanced ability to effectively present complex finance related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
In depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

Extensive knowledge and experience with UC regulations and systems, particularly in the area of Extramural Funds, contracts and grants, and general accounting.
Advance knowledge and experience in developing and successfully managing academic, research, and clinical budgets including identifying variances and developing and implementing corrections to avoid or reverse deficit conditions.
Strong knowledge of recharge activity policies and procedures. Ability to develop recharge activity proposals and rate charges annually. Advance knowledge of cost accounting practices and the administration of income producing activities.
Demonstrated ability to analyze situations, identify issues, implement action plans and make independent decisions in order to meet the varying service needs of internal and external customers.
Demonstrated knowledge of statistical principles and demonstrated ability to do statistical data analysis and interpretation. Excellent mathematical skills for calculations involving data projections and adjustments.
Demonstrated strong experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by subordinate staff and set performance standards. Demonstrated experience and skill to assess staff capabilities and workloads and redistribute when necessary.
Advance skill to analyze large quantities of data (financial, space, workload) and in identifying objectives and constraints, and developing effective recommendations.
