Director of Finance and Operations, Applied Physics
The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.
The Department of Applied Physics is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to partner with the department faculty and staff to achieve continued growth and preeminence in research and teaching. Reporting to the Chair of Applied Physics, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration at H&S, the DFO will provide strategic leadership and direction for the operations, administration, faculty affairs, and finances for the department. The DFO functions as a generalist and with considerable autonomy, exercising sound judgment in carrying out their responsibilities while working collaboratively and closely with the Department Chair, and the faculty. The DFO seeks assistance from, and delegates to functional experts in the H&S Dean's Office and others across the Department on complex matters. The DFO acts as a trusted colleague to both faculty and staff and serves as a consultant and representative for the Department to other organizations within the University, including close partnership with the Dean of Research.
This is a 100% FTE, exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.
