Director of Finance and Administration, McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society
The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.
The McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society seeks to hire a Director of Finance and Administration (DFA), which is a reimagined position as the Center enters an exciting period of growth with expanded funding. The Ethics Center is home to a diverse and growing portfolio of initiatives that reach audiences across campus and beyond. These initiatives include an undergraduate honors program, ethics-focused classes, fellowships on and off campus, research collaborations, curricular endeavors, and public events with renowned speakers. Through these efforts, the Center is committed to bringing ethical reflection to bear on important social problems through research, teaching, and public engagement.
The DFA will have a leadership role at the Center and will be responsible for all financial management and HR functions, as well as overall operational management in partnership with the Executive Director and the Faculty Director. The DFA will be a key member of the Center's team at a critical moment: the Center is growing with new programming and funding, and we need a high-accountability, organized, and resourceful DFA to ensure that we are well-positioned to meet our short and long term goals. In addition to managing the Center's finances and day-to-day operations, the DFA will work with Center leadership on strategic planning.
Much of the Center's expanding work is in the arena of technology ethics, which presents new opportunities for interdisciplinary work and partnerships across Silicon Valley and beyond. The DFA will determine how new and existing funding streams related to this work should be structured and will work with Center leadership to prepare budget proposals for additional funding opportunities. The DFA will also work with the Center staff to ensure this expanding area of work is ready to be executed alongside our longstanding portfolio of programs that address a broader array of ethical and policy issues.
Since this is a reimagined role at the Center, the DFA will have the opportunity to shape core operations of the Center, institute best practices, and provide financial leadership and strategic planning to carry the Center through this period of growth and beyond.
Specific job duties include: create Center-wide budget, monitor monthly expenses, and forecast short- and long-term scenarios for individual PTAs and for the Center as a whole, review current PTA structure and plan for new streams of funding; implement best practices for grants and oversee internal and external grants; manage all HR functions for staff, post docs, and student workers as well as all visiting scholar, lecturer appointments; provide general operations leadership and support. The DFO will also supervise 1-3 direct reports.
We are a small but growing staff that works together to support each other in a collaborative, congenial work environment. We make every effort to ensure that we each have access to the tools and experiences we need to be successful in our current roles as well as with an eye towards individual growth.
This is a 100% FTE exempt hybrid position with regular work being done on campus and remotely.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. To be considered, please submit a cover letter and a resume.
