Under general supervision the Financial Planning Analyst II is responsible for the preparation, coordination, and documentation of financial analysis projects. This role supports multiple financial analysis efforts throughout the company, interact thoughtfully and collaboratively with various disciplines and management levels, and demonstrate a persistent “we can do this better” mind-set.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the annual income statement planning process. Recommend actionable changes that contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall process. Throughout the year, prepare subsequent analyses comparing the plan to actuals and provide meaningful commentary explaining any variances.
Take ownership of the capital budgeting and reporting process: (1) Assist with designing a structure to capture cash outlays by various capital projects and provide meaningful reports that compares spending to initial estimates and subsequent revisions; (2) Identify feedback mechanisms that provide area management with the true cost of project milestones so as to incorporate into future estimates; (3) work with other departments to design and refine systematic reports that accurately reflect the true financial consequences of their projects
Experiment with studies using various analysis techniques that identify the drivers behind the various cost categories in the income statement: (1) work with disciplines throughout the organization to prove the causation of the identified drivers; and (2) working with these groups, submit fact-based suggestions on how to mitigate or reduce costs.
Participate in a team to improve the modeling of the organizations’ income statements and balance sheets. Some aspects of this project to include: (1) deciding the best platform to use for this effort; (2) identify relationships between revenue and expense categories and how to best correlate non-financial measures to financial statement line items; (3) how best to model the relationship between balance sheet and income statement line items; and (4) identify the most efficient way to consolidate the information for a total company view (including eliminations).
Coordinate the annual collection of corporate-based budget forecasts: (1) establish the time line and identify data items to be collected; (2) prepare and distribute communication materials to the staff; and (3) analyze the submitted forecasts for reasonableness (provide feedback to budget holders for questionable estimates).
Monitor cost center spending at the corporate-based departments: (1) work with team to develop monthly expense reporting (that includes headcounts along with comparison to estimates and prior year); and (2) work to understand large forecast variances and provide feedback to financial management.
Qualifications
Three years in a finance-related capacity
Thorough working knowledge of spreadsheet (Excel) and database/analytical packages (such as Access, SQL)
Experience with SAP or other ERP/accounting software is preferred
Demonstrated ability to understand financial statements and how various line items relate to each other
The ability to work within a team and serve as a trusted expert for assigned areas
Demonstrate past successful experiences with modeling an event or project and how the knowledge gained from the model was incorporated into decision making
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with persistence, determination, and a can-do attitude
