The Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) promotes the mission, standards, and policies of the Academy and provides leadership as these evolve and are evaluated. The DFO works strategically with the Head of School and Board of Trustees in managing the Academy’s resources prudently and safeguarding the Academy’s assets, ensuring the financial viability of the Academy for future generations. The DFO performs professional accounting work involving compilation, consolidation and analysis of financial data and establishes appropriate financial controls and procedures. The DFO maintains and fosters high ethical standards, integrity and respect for the school community in the conduct of the school’s business. The DFO provides leadership and management of the Academy’s operating budget and finances and is responsible for the supervision, coordination, and administration of all aspects of the business office, plant and facilities.
This position reports to the Head of School, is a member of the Head of School Council, and serves as chief staff liaison to the Finance and Facilities Committee of the Board of Trustees and the The Archmere Trust; working closely with committee chairs and organizing agendas and meeting materials and presenting at meetings.
Business or Accounting degree required, a master’s in business administration, accounting, finance or CPA
Ideally a minimum of 5 years of senior-level experience in an accounting, budget and planning management role in a non-profit organization, preferably in independent schools
Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to take complex topics and explain them in clear non-technical terms
Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills in analyzing strategic decisions, taking into consideration operational costs and organizational strengths and weaknesses opposite the competition and market place
Strong mentoring, coaching experience, along with demonstrated experience in measuring and improving organization-wide productivity
Experience in human resource management, employee benefits (including pension plans), and payroll procedures
Knowledge of business and not-for-profit accounting policies, procedures, practices, and software programs, including the Google application suite and Blackbaud software
Skilled at negotiating and initiating contracts with external vendors
Ability to remain calm, flexible, and work effectively under pressure with a customer service orientation in dealing with all constituencies of the school
