IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Finance Manager to join the IHME Financial Planning and Operations team (FPO).
IHME is a growing organization that is looking for someone to ensure that we are managing and improving our financial systems to be efficient, intelligent, and adaptable. The Finance Manager is responsible for orchestrating the overall rhythm of business for the FPO team.
This position will supervise a team of financial analysts who implement and carry out key financial management processes for the Institute under their direction. The Finance Manager will be an adept project manager who ensures timeliness on the delivery of required products from their team for internal and external audiences. They will also be responsible for carrying out and ensuring clear and timely communication on financial reporting and administrative matters within IHME, with UW offices, and with donors. The position must ensure completeness, compliance and accuracy of needed financial information to ensure IHME’s financial stability and health. We are looking for someone who excels in the following areas: analytic assessment, project management, systems creation and implementation, communication, supervision and development of their staff, an ability to pivot easily, comfortable with change and make decisions that can have wide impacts across the organization. This position is contingent on project funding availability.
Financial Planning and Management
Lead regular reporting meetings with budget owners to inform and assess progress against financial targets, identify potential risks and opportunities, and make adjustments to ensure sound financial management over the lifetime of the funding sources.
Develop, mentor, and train Financial Analysts as it pertains to managing budgets, developing projections, interpreting financial data, costing, and working with budget owners on the review of their funding.
Create processes that ensure high quality and timely execution of the rhythm of business; identify and implement tools to execute those processes efficiently.
Review and interpret monthly financial results and develop mechanisms to provide regular updates to senior leadership.
Identify and explain budget variances and provide recommendations accordingly.
Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting data for the Board, organizational leaders, University offices, and donors.
Main point of contact as the financial steward between IHME, UW Central Finance Offices, Donors and Sponsors. Interpret policies and regulations concerning the Institute’s financial activities, ensuring compliance with the University’s policies and procedures as well as guidelines from the federal government, state, and other research project sponsors.
Update and develop IHME policies, procedures, and guidelines for IHME-wide financial processes.
In concert with the Financial Reporting Manager, oversee the continuous improvement of financial processes and systems to meet the evolving needs of the organization to achieve best practices and optimal output.
Develop and drive strategic planning goals and milestones for the Financial Planning team to continually improve and iterate upon our key areas of work
Lead regular team meetings to review any pertinent updates, deadlines, and changes to ongoing grants and awards.
Work with IHME’s Proposal Development Team to ensure that all necessary financial information is provided for pre-award documentation and ensure effective handoff processes between pre- and post-award.
Participate as a member of the Financial Planning and Operations team leadership. Develop and monitor progress against performance indicators. Assess overall organizational needs and help FPO align best to address them as appropriate.
Manage staff to include: hiring and training, assigning work hours, managing workflow, priority setting, contributing to professional growth and performance assessment, resolving complaints, and initiating disciplinary action for supervisees.
Train team members, providing guidance, coaching and support, and course-correcting guidance when necessary.
Ensure the team delivers to the highest standards of the organization.
Identify and foster opportunities to advance individuals’ knowledge and abilities.
Ensure the team works effectively with other groups at IHME - promote cross-organization teamwork.
Assess and map project deliverables to resource needs and allocate resources accordingly; advise PI on short- and long-term team structure.
Provide ideas, content, and support for the development of internal trainings, both for your team, IHME, and external audiences. Teach established trainings.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field and five years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Three years’ project management experience, including demonstrated ability to think independently, to be flexible and to juggle multiple priorities.
Experience using and applying business intelligence tools to improve quality.
Two years’ experience mentoring and supervising staff.

Demonstrated experience assessing strategic priorities, creatively identify solutions, and implementing plans systematically and with strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated acumen with financial and problem-solving skills. Experience with data analysis, modeling, and forecasting.
Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication skills, both written and oral; ability to build and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization and effectively explain complex issues and concepts in simple, understandable language.
Ability to quickly adapt and adjust to changes in organizational processes, compliance rules, and University of Washington guidelines.
Experience with University of Washington systems such as Enterprise Data Warehouse and My Financial Desktop.
Familiarly with a major research university setting or non-profit research organizations.
Experience with data integration.
Advanced level of Microsoft Access and PowerPoint.
