The position reports to the Assistant Director-Financial Services in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Fiscal Administration unit. The Payroll Finance Manager position is responsible for providing leadership on the financial service team dedicated to CLA Payroll. This position supervises a team comprised of six employees and is responsible for ensuring the payroll functions are managed effectively, deadlines met, and compliance with University policy is followed. They assign and manage the work and special projects to ensure the team is providing good payroll customer service to the departments they serve.
Much of this position may be performed remotely while specific tasks and some meetings will require on-campus presence.
This position will assist in the implementation of the PEAK initiatives currently underway at the University of Minnesota. It will also support the payroll functions that remain within CLA after the PEAK implementation is finished.
Team Management and Supervision (60%)
Manage finance team of six payroll staff to include hiring, training, performance management, coaching, discipline, and professional development; provide leadership and foster professional and positive working environment.
Conduct ongoing performance management to include annual performance evaluations, solicit input from department chairs, directors and administrators on a regular basis.
Manage the team’s workflow and delegate work assignments to provide timely service and meet all deadlines; take appropriate action if activity of a department requires additional support on a temporary basis.
Payroll Management (30%)
Coordinate all payroll workflows for assigned units to include appointment entry, abstract review, time & absence, and position management. Manage utilization of a CLA subsidiary payroll software called Laserfiche. Anticipate change and address labor allocation; plan, schedule and organize work.
Manage collegiate I-9 processes and staffing to ensure compliance with University policy.
Oversee on-going payroll processes, ensure policy compliance; develop procedures in collaboration with management of workgroup to ensure consistency across college and efficiency in processes.
Resource on University and College Policy (10%)
Serve on University and College-level committee and workgroups.
Continuing policy education and technical payroll training within the College and University.
Other projects as assigned.
BA/BS degree plus at least six (6) years of experience
Five years of progressive payroll experience
Previous professional experience with accounting, financial reporting or financial analysis
Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite with strong Excel skills
Repetitive motions using a keyboard, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, however frequently walking to meetings that are held in various building throughout the East and West banks of campus will be necessary.
Training and demonstrated proficiency required for access to University financial, payroll, and human resources systems.
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Experience supervising professional payroll staff
Proven capability with building, sustaining, and promoting positive, productive, and collaborative team of payroll staff; able to lead and develop a team, work independently, and contribute as a member of a variety of workgroups and committees
Excellent interpersonal relations and problem solving skills
Experience managing workflows within payroll and accounts payable or accounts receivable
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and adapt communication style to a wide variety of audiences. Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to interpret, present, and analyze information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of financial reports and other materials
Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to use good judgment to prioritize multiple projects for entities with competing interests; demonstrated ability to prioritize work assignments from multiple sources; experience making educated, independent decisions and recommendations for action during the course of assigned work duties
Experience with database management and queries; strong statistical and mathematical aptitude
