Our Team:
The Budget and Finance Team within the SC Johnson College of Business supports strategic and transactional financial operations across our three schools, our central college unit, the Statler Hotel, and across our two campuses in Ithaca and NYC. This team consists of individuals who take a progressive approach to financial planning and reporting, utilizing data-driven techniques and tools to support our College's mission and enhance our organizational effectiveness.
This Position:
Under the general direction of the Associate Director and as a highly engaged and collaborative member of the greater finance team, this position works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and leadership within the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business to plan and execute financial activities: budget, re-forecast, reconciliation, reporting, and analysis primarily related to non-sponsored research.
This position provides clear and concise financial summaries/reports, ensures local and central systems data reconciles, and outlines/resolves variances in support of budget owners and college leadership's decision-making. The Assistant Finance Specialist coordinates and facilitates procurement contract activities and training partnering with the Shared Service Center.
The Assistant Finance Specialist will need strong communication skills to partner with budget owners, business partners, and the finance team. This role develops and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs) and provides training and guidance to fellow team members, faculty, and staff on finance matters, processes, and best practices.
This position provides backup and support to fellow team members as may be necessary to meet departmental demands and deadlines.
This position requires staying current in Cornell University and SC Johnson College of Business policies and procedures related to finance activities and participating in training through the Division of Financial Affairs and the Shared Service Center.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's degree with 4 - 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination
- Accounting experience and/or formal coursework in Accounting applications is required.
- Must be able to compile, analyze, and report on complex data.
- Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people.
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and prioritization skills are required.
- Able to work quickly & effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks, balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
- Must be comfortable working in an environment where the change in process/procedures is the norm.
- Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on complex situations.
- Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of the overall team
- Must be able and willing to enhance personal knowledge, skills, and abilities as needed
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience at a higher education institution with concentrated experience in a financial office setting.
- An understanding of Cornell policies and procedures related to financial processing and management.
- Familiar with University systems: KFS, OAS, Tableau.
- Expertise in Excel, KFS, OAS Dashboards.
