At time of hire, this position will be responsible for financial oversight of the Center for Global Health & Social Responsibility, but within the OACA Finance Office. The work of this position includes acting as the primary OACA Office finance contact to the assigned center, providing financial analysis of sponsored and non-sponsored accounts, acting as the effort coordinator, and coordinating financial activities.
The Center for Global Health & Social Responsibility (CGHSR) Finance Professional position is part of a center team consisting of 10 professional staff and faculty advisors. CGHSR is part of the University of Minnesota Office of Academic Clinical Affairs (OACA). Together with schools and colleges across the University of Minnesota, we facilitate and lead activities in education, research, and capacity building in order to fulfill our mission to advance health worldwide through collaborative partnerships, sustainable programs, and academic excellence.
OACA Finance provides financial services to all shared service units and interdisciplinary centers that report to the VP for Clinical Affairs. Our finance group provides either direct financial support where the unit has none, supplementary financial support where the unit has some but not a full staff, or backup to those units who have their own finance staff. As needs change, the units this position works with will shift to reflect current demand.
DUTIES:
35% Financial Analysis / Reporting: Provide comprehensive, financial reports and projections for assigned units and Principal Investigator’s (PI’s) on sponsored and non-sponsored funds. Monitor financial performance. Analyze trends in revenues and expenses; provide tuition revenue analysis and projections. Determine cost/benefit of various operational decisions and options. Ensure compliance with Federal laws/regulations and University policies/procedures. For CFO and others, run queries against data warehouse or UM Analytics, download and analyze large amounts of data in excel and create pivot tables and other summaries. Serve as primary point of contact for assigned units. Meet with unit directors and assist as needed to keep financial business moving. Guide and support training of other financial staff. Interpret policy, provide oversight, advise units on compliance, policies, and regulations, and make recommendations on appropriate procedures. Approve expenditures and transactions. Review transactions for compliance with University and/or sponsor policies.
10% External Sales Organization (ESO) Accounting: Work with unit staff to establish and update annual rates for external sales for complex activities. Monitor spending to ensure compliance with budgets. Ensure proper account structure and proper recording of costs. Coordinate ESO activity with ESO office, ensure appropriate contracts are in place.
30% Research/Contract Accounting Support and Analysis: Financial partner over life of grant or contract. Assist with pre-award coordination and project management of federal, foundation, and industry sponsored grants and contracts, as well as non-financial post-award coordination and management. This position will work collaboratively with similar positions in our Clinical Translational Science Institute and the Masonic Cancer Center, as we aim to partner our professionals from across OACA to provide investigators with the most knowledgeable and efficient grants management support. Prepare proposals, develop budget and establish accounts. Analyze spending and burn rates on sponsored projects, analyze impact on overall department budgets. Analyze labor distribution and adjust as needed. Forecast future spending. Close grants. Review and approve all travel expenses, as well as expenses over $1000 on sponsored research projects. Coordinate bi-annual effort certification for supported faculty. Resolve issues with Sponsored Projects Administration and Sponsored Financial Reporting. Serve as Certified Approver for OACA units.
15% Budgeting: Lead budget process for assigned units. Analyze historical trends, current operations, operational changes, and revenue streams to prepare preliminary budget for leadership team. Make recommendations regarding personnel, operations and capital items in budget. Support unit directors at budget meetings with the Office of the VP for OACA . Ensure the accounting structure will measure budget performance and input budgets into the financial system. Administer and monitor budget; recommend allocation/reallocation of resources as needed. Assist in the financial component of course development for units.
10% Other Administrative: Other finance-adjacent activities, particularly with HR, as needed.
This position is currently fully remote but subject to change based on departmental need and University guidance.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of professional experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal nine years
- Experience performing administrative, budgetary, or grant-related duties
- Experience in technology and software as related to the needs of the position (e.g.,Word, Excel, Adobe, Google suite, PowerPoint, Access or other database software, etc.)
- Strong mathematical skills
- Excellent team member skills and the ability to effectively interface with all levels of the organization (students, staff, faculty, central administration)
- Ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects with fixed deadlines and ability to re-prioritize tasks as needed to successfully meet all deadlines
- Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative, accountability, and follow- through on complex and sensitive issues
- Effective problem identification and problem solving skills
- Willingness to learn and grow professionally
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in the work of the center, and a willingness to be involved in shaping the strategic direction of the center
- Experience and interest in working directly with faculty from various colleges
- Experience working in global settings and/or a desire to work with other cultures
- Cradle to grave grant management preferred, but not required
- Certified Approver, or desire to complete certification requirements
- Effective communicator
- Experience working with multiple colleges within the University of Minnesota system
