Associate Executive Director of Finance and Operations

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Executive Director for Operations will serve as an organizational leader in operational strategy, including Financial, Investment and Human Resource Management.
The successful candidate will have a strong grounding in social justice, particularly related to anti-black oppression, and a deep commitment to transforming the scale, impact, and quality of efforts to advance racial and social equity. The ideal candidates will have a high level of emotional maturity, high tolerance for ambiguity, the ability to adapt quickly to change, and success working effectively in a collaborative team environment with persons from diverse cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds ??? including internationally.
a. Partners with the Executive Director and the senior leadership team on a range of organizational development priorities to ensure that the organization has fitting culture, people, systems, structures, and capacity.
b. Assumes primary operational responsibilities, including finance, risk management, compliance, miscellaneous legal and information technology.
c. Leads and oversees operational systems and processes that are robust, audit-ready, and proactively address operational challenges and needs to better support AFRE???s work.
d. Designs and implements seamless, effective, and repeatable operational processes across all areas of the organization.
Finance and Investment Management
a. Creates and describes the financial vision of AFRE and creates the infrastructure to execute on it.
b. Models future projections and scenarios to support the Board in decision making. Supports transparency around financial disclosures. Prepares and presents financial reports to the Board.
c. Manages finances, including budget development and monitoring spending, and providing approvals as appropriate.
d. Supervises finance and operations staff including guiding the development and implementation of growth plans for staff.
e. Monitors the performance of the funds to ensure the programme???s financial health.
f. Supports the Finance and Investment Committee on the Governance Board in relation to AFRE???s fund management strategy and implementation
a. Collaborates with Senior Management in setting and driving organizational vision, operational strategy, and hiring needs.
b. Manages the development of transnational human resource operations.
c. Guides the development of staff policies and procedures.
a. Contributes to Board management, including working with the Executive Committee to plan Board meetings and supporting the work of other Board Committees as needed.
b. Serves as a thought partner to the Executive Director on the development of policies, procedures and an organisational culture that embodies AFRE???s values and vision.
a. Shares in engaging with key institutional partners to maintain productive relationships and manage risk.
b. Shares in communicating about AFRE???s work to internal and external stakeholders to build AFRE???s public visibility and strategic connections.
Bachelor's degree /or equivalent related experience required. 5 years of related experience;
At least 4 years of senior management experience in a key Operational role in non-profits.
Proven experience as Chief Operating Officer or a minimum of 7+ Years of Operations experience
Relevant degree in HR, Business Administration, or investment management
Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development
In-depth knowledge of different business functions such as HR, Finance (including budgeting)
Knowledge of auditing principles and Risk Assessment Techniques
Working knowledge of IT, data analysis, and performance/operation metrics
Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities
Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills
Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving
Knowledge of Personnel Management
Knowledge of Project Management Principles, practice and tools, and techniques
Demonstrable openness to new approaches and continual spirit of learning
Excellent oral and written communications skills. Experience effectively presenting to senior leadership and/or board members.
An MBA, JD or other advanced degree is a plus.
Start-up experience a plus.
Ability to travel via airplane and ground transportation is required.
Ability to conduct extensive hours of work at a computer with reasonable accommodations is required.
This position will require international travel.
