OverviewThe Department of Comparative Literature seeks a Manager of Finance and Administration to provide administrative leadership for the academic unit. The manager works closely with the department chair to execute policy and strategic direction for the operation of the department and participates in short and long-term planning for unit operations and activities. The manager reports directly to the department chair, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Manager for Academic Administration, Human Resources.
The three most important aspects of the manager’s responsibilities are financial management, staff supervision, and academic administration.
ResponsibilitiesBudget and financial management: The manager develops the administrative budget for the academic department, in collaboration with the chair. The manager is responsible for careful and appropriate management of the departmental funds, endowed funds, and sponsored research grants. The manager provides regular and timely analysis and projections to the chair and ensures adherence to prescribed policies and procedures.
Staff supervision: The manager supervises the hiring, performance reviews, merit increase process and terminations of the administrative staff, including regular staff, casual hourly employees and student employees. The manager also supervises part-time technical staff. The manager should be knowledgeable of University policies and familiar with visa regulations, federal work study requirements, tax laws and fair labor standards.
Academic administration: The manager supervises the administration of the teaching component of departmental activities, ensuring that the academic department meets all deadlines for the offices of the Dean of the Faculty, Registrar, Dean of the College, and the Graduate School. The academic manager is responsible for the administration of the teaching budget, faculty appointments and promotion reviews, as well as lecturer and instructional assignments. This role also oversees departmental events and conferences, external communications, and facilities management.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree.
- 4-6 years’ experience in nonprofit or higher education management.
- Experience in budget management and oversight of financial operations.
- Experience in the supervision and monitoring of staff relations and staff development and delegation of supervisory responsibility.
- Confident leadership, problem-solving and independent decision-making skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to anticipate and initiate appropriate action in support of the chair and department faculty.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to collaborate effectively
- Proficiency with learning new software.
