Position Summary
Arts and Sciences at Columbia University is seeking an energetic, experienced, senior-level academic, financial planner to develop sound academic financial planning models and policies to forecast the impact of these projects and others. Columbia University has initiated several large-scale projects in recent years, including initiatives in faculty growth, improved financial aid, and campus expansion. As the academic and financial heart of the university, Arts and Sciences is both a central participant in and contributor to these projects.
In this context, The Deputy Vice President for Finance and Administration will lead the Financial, Technology, and Human Resources strategy for Arts and Sciences. In addition, the DVP will assess the financial policies and practices and identify models for the long-term development of its resources. S/he will have financial planning experience in complex higher education institutions or other relevant not-for-profit settings. The successful candidate should have experience working with academic policy issues, budget analysis, and resource planning. As a senior leader, the DVP must be an effective and clear communicator, able to influence and persuade stakeholders across A&S and the broader University community to work collaboratively, reach consensus, and align competing interests and priorities with diverse constituencies in a complex environment.
Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President for Arts and Sciences, the incumbent is responsible for the development of all academic, financial planning models and policies for Arts and Sciences and will be a key player in formulating the overall strategic plan for Arts and Sciences, including, administration, and human resources.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the EVP for Arts and Sciences to formulate and implement the academic goals and objectives of Arts & Sciences.
- Develop relationships with business officers at each of the five schools and twenty-eight departments to ascertain creative ways to manage finances and streamline costs.
- Act as liaison between the school's senior business officers, central university executives, and the EVP for financial reporting, analyses, and policy formulation.
- Interact with central university administration to develop the financial information necessary for the effective administration of Arts & Sciences.
- Assure optimum utilization of financial resources through sound forecasting to assess the financial status of the Division.
- Collect, interpret, and report key financial data.
- Perform complex analyses of financial, staffing, and student enrollment data for policy formulation and revenue and expense projection.
- Develop, recommend, and implement strategies to proactively address issues or problems with financial results and ensure balanced fiscal operations.
- Develop short and long-term financial plans in accordance with the Division's academic objectives.
- Coordinate the communications of the Division's financial forecast to the faculty, schools, and departments in the Division and central University administration.
- Oversee the preparation of studies to determine the financial aspects of current and proposed projects, plans, and other business operations.
- Oversee the preparation of management reports to facilitate communication with internal offices and departments, external constituencies, and the wider University community.
- Keep current on digital and technological innovations affecting the Division of Arts and Sciences to increase efficiency.
- Oversee the Arts and Sciences Office of Human Resources in its management of administrative staff numbering over 400 full-time officers and support staff.
- Maintain annual and five-year forecasts for the operating and capital budgets of the Arts and Sciences.
- Supervise the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations and Planning, and the Associate Vice President for Human Resources.
Minimum Qualifications
An advanced degree in business, public policy, or a related field and at least fifteen years of senior administrative experience in higher education or other relevant not-for-profit settings are required.
