Finance Director, Surgical Administrative Center
Program/Unit Description:
The Finance Director for the Surgical Administrative Center provides financial leadership and oversight of the Departments of Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Urology in the University of Minnesota Medical School. Collectively, these departments incur $150 million in annual expenses, including $20M in sponsored grants and contracts.
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for directing and overseeing the finance and accounting functions of the academic departments and clinical service units; leading a collaborative and productive work team based in respect, accountability and service; developing and coordinating complex financial forecasting, productivity analyses, business plans and compensation models; and providing strategic financial guidance for implementing identified goals and priorities. This position reports directly to the Medical School Director of Finance and Accounting and serves as a contributor to the department management teams.
â— Supervision and management of two Financial Analysts, one Accounting Manager, and eight Accountants.
â— Responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training and professional development of financial staff.
â— Oversight of all financial transactions to ensure compliance with Federal, University, Medical School, and MPhysicians regulations and policies.
â— Coordination of financial analyses and forecasts of all funds for the departments.
â— Provide the financial analysis needed for long-term strategic planning.
â— Development and management of UMN departmental and MPhysicians budgets.
â— Present reports to the Department Chairs, Vice-Chairs, Division Directors, and other faculty on all financial aspects of the departments.
â— Development and implementation of procedures and processes for the center in conjunction with the Dean's Office, MPhysicians senior staff, and the other Finance Directors.
â— Engage in the contracting process for both the University and MPhysicians.
Essential Qualifications:
â— Bachelor’s degree with ten or more years of experience in a comparably large and complex organization, including management or supervisory experience.
â— Excellent leadership skills with the ability to foster a professional and positive working environment.
â— Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
â— Demonstrated ability and experience in leading and implementing process improvement.
â— Ability to translate financial concepts to and effectively collaborate with programmatic colleagues who may not have financial backgrounds.
â— A successful track record in setting priorities and demonstrating keen analytic, organizational, and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
â— Must have a collaborative work style.
â— Excellent technical skills with high proficiency in the analytical application of relevant computer software packages (e.g. Excel, Access, RedCap, HRTS, and BI).
â— Demonstrated experience developing, supporting and implementing financial improvement initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
â— Advanced degree or certification.
â— Extensive knowledge and experience in the financial management of a Medical School and/or health care organization or physician group.
â— Knowledge of managing and implementing physician compensation plans, and analyzing physician and Principal Investigator productivity.
â— Experience in the financial management of research grants, philanthropic accounts, and clinical trials.
â— Extensive experience in short-term and long-term financial business planning and contracting.
â— Management experience requiring executive level interaction.
â— Leading teams in a hybrid remote-work environment.
