The School of Nursing has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director, Finance and Administration. The organizational structure of the UW SoN functions in various ways, including strategic, operational, and tactical. The strategic level represents the Dean and other senior leadership. Central support to the School is provided by the Office of the Dean and includes 11 units: Finance & Administration, Student & Academic Services, Information Technology, Learning Technology, Office of Nursing Research, Continuing Nursing Education, Advancement, Marketing & Communications, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Nursing Simulation Center and Organizational Development/Human Resources & Payroll Services. The two academic departments include Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Informatics (BNHI) and Child, Family and Population Health Nursing (CFPHN). This position is a critical member of UW SoN business operations, providing operational and strategic oversight into a broad array of business support services. This position requires a commitment to client service, the ability to work collaboratively in a changing environment, and the skill to work with members of the University community (faculty, staff, and students) who have diverse business skills
Operations
Oversee budgets of the SoN Office of the Dean including grants and contract, gift, endowment, professorship, discretionary and other operating budgets. Troubleshoot all related issues that cannot be resolved by staff, acting as a liaison when necessary between other Units, Departments, external vendors, Procurement and Accounts Payable. Oversee the development of the SoN Summer Quarter budget by fiscal staff in conjunction with the UW Continuum College and related SoN departments and units. Oversee the development of the budgets by fiscal staff for fee-based academic programs with the UW Continuum College and related SoN departments and units. Oversee, develop and manage the SoN Compliance Dashboard in coordination with the Budget/Fiscal Operations Supervisor. Manage and facilitate the annual SoN merit increase process for staff and faculty and the periodic unit adjustments for faculty. Advise SoN Executive Team and administrators regarding fund determinants and management. Direct timely, accurate and well-supported processing of financial statements and reports. Serve as primary liaison and point of service for staff for accounting questions, issues and information requests. Serve as subject matter expert representing accounting on cross-functional projects to ensure downstream accounting and financial reporting requirements as well as upstream procurement cycle objectives are considered and addressed appropriately. Advise leadership on space and oversee space management.
Serve as backup for SoN payroll approvals and ProCard activities. Analysis & Reporting
Lead quarterly budget meetings with School leadership. Oversee the preparation of unit spending reports and financial forecasts related to state budgets, indirect cost recovery, self-sustaining activities, gifts, endowment operating funds, grants and contracts, and other funds. Prepare pro forma financial analysis for the SoN to support optimal decision-making and cost management. Develop recommendations for the most cost-effective and appropriate use and allocation of resources. Prepare customized reports for the Executive Team to summarize and analyze complex fiscal data relating to budget and salary distributions to assist with long range budget planning. Ensure accounting practices are compliance with the UW SoN, the UW, State, Federal, industry and other regulatory agency requirements and communicates accounting issues and updates as needed to Nursing and other impacted staff. Develop, modify and maintain reporting systems for SoN departmental budgets to determine appropriate allocation of funds, review accuracy of budget activity reports, report individual faculty allocations, unit wide expenditures, and predict general departmental fiscal needs and commitments for the Executive Team
Process Improvement
Collaborates with SoN leadership to review the Dean’s Office operations processes and efficiencies, proposing improvements toward alignment with the SoN Strategic Academic Business Plan (SABP). Identifies relevant metrics for tracking and reporting performance improvement, exceptions and process opportunities. Collaborate with peers on the development and implementation of standard procedures and practices across the organization. Support Balanced Scorecard measurement and reporting efforts. Identify and adapt best practices from other UW units, Nursing peers, and others.

Required Qualifications •Five to eight years of increasingly responsible experience in University departmental/school administration and/or research administration. •Working knowledge of operating procedures in a large research university. •Strong analytical skills and proficiency in financial and decision support systems. •Proficiency in systems and organizational management is essential. •Excellent written and verbal skills, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and other constituents, and a commitment to transparency in fiscal decisions. •Proven leadership and sophisticated communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, capacity to build and lead teams, highly organized, detail oriented and able to effectively manage multiple demands and priorities. •Demonstrate a high degree of initiative-taking, problem solving capability and capacity for innovative thinking. A thorough knowledge of University financial systems is a necessity.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired Qualifications •Advanced degree in public or business administration or healthcare administration. •Knowledge of revenue enhancement strategies. •Experience with a comprehensive approach to strategic planning and organizational development. •Experience with process improvement techniques and demonstrated effectiveness managing in a culture of change and transition. •Prior experience managing through change and implementing reorganization strategies. •Computer skills including working with databases, spreadsheets and word processing. •Competency in working with diverse populations. •Experience with UW systems especially Ariba, ProCard and MyFinancial.Desktop. •Problem-solving and decision-making skills. •Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
