Cardinal Newman seeks a motivated and dedicated Director of Finance, fully committed to our Catholic educational apostolates. The Director of Finance serves as a strategic partner to the Principal, collaborating to ensure that Cardinal Newman’s mission is delivered with optimal efficiency and effectiveness. They are responsible for the fiscal health, long range financial planning, and risk management of the school. They supervise and manage financial operations, benefits and insurance for the school. They are responsible for inspiring and motivating team members to ensure that responsibility and accountability for financial excellence at every level of the organization. They will report accurate, timely and relevant reports to the Principal, Advisory Council, and Diocese to aid in facilitating strategic decisions that allow the school to achieve its goals.
The Director will possess a strategic and forward-thinking style, balanced with significant experience overseeing budgeting and planning, financial forecasting and analysis, benefits and insurance, The Director of Finance will report directly to the principal.
Insurance and Benefits:
Oversee the provision of employee compensation, benefits, and retirement plans.
Manage and maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property, employees, students, and directors of the school.
Collaborate with the Advancement office to administer the school’s financial aid program and to achieve annual and long-term philanthropic goals.
Financial and Accounting:
Oversee the closing process and preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, as well as the annual financial audit.
Create, revise, and maintain the annual and five-year budget forecasting model, including department and affiliated organization budgets. .
Monitor and report variances in financial results and suggest corrective actions.
Oversee cash, investments, debt, and asset management.
Develop and monitor policies supporting reserves, endowment, and debt obligations as applicable.
Review and ensure the application of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
Develop and maintain banking and insurance relationships.
Analyze and advise on the financing alternatives for new projects, as well as existing debt holdings.
Oversees all school purchasing, billing, payables, financial investments, banking activities, payroll, and benefits programs.
Work with the school’s independent auditors and prepare the necessary documentation for a successful completion of the audit. File the appropriate of tax returns and other regulatory filings on time and precision. Ensure that all school, personnel, and operational policies are in compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
Prepare forecasts and projections to provide financial insights to the Principal, Advisory Council, and Diocese.
Assists Principal with decisions regarding salaries for new employees.
Compliance and Risk:
Remain current on changes in government regulations impacting the school.
Ensure regulatory compliance as a non-profit corporation, as a school, and as an employer. This includes compliance with federal, state, and local regulation in the areas of financial and tax reporting, debt covenants and employee benefits.

Strong verbal and professional written communication skills.
Remain fluent and up to date on financial software and obtain training as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.
5 years’ experience in finance.
Proven track record of organization improvement and change management. Can adapt to a hands-on, detail oriented work environment.
Advanced skills needed in critical thinking, data analysis, spreadsheet software, and proficiency with accounting and financial systems.
Strong experience with database management systems (like Blackbaud or others).

Originally founded in 1858 by the Ursulilne sisters, Cardinal Newman opened on the parish grounds of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia as both Ursuline and Catholic High schools respectively until moving to Forest Drive in 1961, where it remained until December 2015. In January 2016, Cardinal Newman opened a state-of-the-art, 50-acre campus at 2945 Alpine Road.
