The School of Social Ecology is comprised of three highly ranked departments with a shared commitment to scholarship that views human behavior in a larger social and institutional context, that moves beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, and that seeks to disseminate knowledge beyond the confines of the university to a broader public. The Business and Research Services (BRS) unit administers the school's financial resources to achieve the School's and University's goals.
Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean in the School of Social Ecology, determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Manages, prepares, administers, and directs appropriations of permanent and temporary allocations of all sources of operating funds including: general funds, student fees, opportunity, gifts, sales and services, and contracts and grants. Manages the activities of all financial functions of the School, provides guidance to Department Managers, and sets standards for internal controls. Reviews and approves recommendations for financial planning and control. Monitors the maintenance of the school's budget; and develops systems, reports, and analyses to support management decision-making needs and department adherence to approved budget. Monitors expenditure of operating funds and apprises management of areas of concern; plans, directs, and evaluates the work of staff involved in the day-to-day operation of the School's operating and contract and grants budgets; oversees the maintenance of the school's budget; and develops systems, reports, and analyses to support management decision-making needs. Work is reviewed and measured based on meeting objectives and schedules. Follows processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules. Acts as liaison with the Office of Planning and Budget, Academic Affairs, Division of Finance and Accounting, and the Office of Research.
8 years of professional experience in accounting, business or a related/transferable field of study.
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Comprehensive knowledge of finance and budget policies, practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; human resource planning; accounting and bookkeeping. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; ability to interact with diverse populations. Client services oriented; good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Ability to multi-task. Knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Ensures compliance with Federal OMB circulars and requirements. Extensive financial and budget management experience in a complex, higher education fund accounting environment. Supervisory experience to direct the work of diverse staff assigned to a variety of tasks and projects . Working knowledge of contracts and grants policies, procedures and administration. Strong management and organizational skills in order to act on behalf of the Assistant Dean in their absence. Experience in creating, implementing, administering and maintaining automated financial systems. Skill to develop recommendations for management based on sound fiscal analysis and research.
Professional certification preferred.
Working knowledge of UCI policies and procedures relating to accounting, contracts and grants, purchasing, payroll/personnel and ability to interpret and apply appropriately.
