The Finance and Accounting team is seeking an Assistant Director to perform a broad range of accounting and financial analysis responsibilities to assure effective and compliant college operations. Key areas of responsibility include financial reporting, analysis and planning, transaction processing, oversight and budgeting, compliance with policies, regulations and laws, operational oversight, training and leadership. Budget oversight involves reporting and reconciling past financial transactions while financial analysis involves planning future financial actions to ensure sustainability.
Specific Job Duties: * Assist in planning and preparation of College of Engineering annual budget across all funding sources. * Oversee the preparation of accounting reports for College of Engineering departments. Prepare highly specialized reports for College of Engineering leadership. * Perform extensive and advanced financial and statistical analysis. Assist in developing situational analyses and compare benchmarking data (to peers and against Strategic Plan). * Develop financial tools such as budget templates for grant management, account reconciliation, and expense management. * Act as collegiate level approver of purchasing and travel transactions in workflow, ensuring proper account usage and compliance with University and collegiate policies. * Evaluate and approve grant budgets. Review and approve submission of Division of Sponsored Programs routing forms. * Responsible for monitoring grant and contract expenses and working with Principal Investigators to verify effort and non-personnel expenses are appropriately charged. * Coordinate and supervise special projects as requested by Director, Finance and Operations. * Monitor and supervise reconciliation of accounts by staff within the units, provide mentoring and auditing as needed. * Assist with fiscal year end close procedures - reviewing balances and processing journal entries as needed.
Supervision received: Administrative supervision from Director, Finance & Operations.
Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Considerable (3-5 years) directly related experience in financial administration. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Superior interpersonal skills, with proven experience establishing and maintaining collaborative, productive, and trusted relationships at all levels of an organization. * A strong customer service orientation and ability to organize and balance multiple priorities. * Demonstrated proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), and HR Information Systems. * Demonstrated commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Desirable Qualifications * Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field. * Experience in an academic college or department. * Experience in an engineering and/or research-related organization. * Experience with interpreting and applying University of Iowa (UI) policies and procedures. * Experience with University of Iowa financial accounting systems. * Experience with data analysis, report creation and/or process improvement.
