Position Summary: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Executive Director of Finance for the Office for Research. The position is directly responsible for the management and leadership of all financial and administrative functions, including finance, accounting, budgeting and forecasting. The Director of Finance is the chief financial officer of Rutgers' Office for Research and is essential in supporting the respective financial and strategic objectives of the numerous functional groups that comprise the Office for Research, which include: Animal Care, Corporate Engagement, Grant and Contract Accounting, Innovation Ventures, Strategic Research Development, Research and Sponsored Programs, Research Regulatory Affairs, Sponsored Research Agreements, and University Core Facilities. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages accounting, budgeting, and forecasting for the Office for Research. Ensures all functional groups and their teams are appropriately resourced to meet operational needs and strategic goals. Financial management responsibility including the preparation, review and approval of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement reporting materials and metrics for the Office for Research in conjunction with the requirements set by central Finance. Works closely with the senior leadership team in developing financial management plans, including annual budgets, periodic financial forecasts, and longer-range strategic plans. Provides proactive, transparent, and in-depth financial analysis to enhance the organization's operations. Continually evaluates best practices and resources with an eye toward both future needs and budget realities. Ensures efficient, effective, and fully compliant management of all financial functions of the organization. Develops and presents the Office for Research's annual budget to the SVP and chancellors, with sound analysis and justification.Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration or a related field. A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in strategic and operational planning, financial analysis, and/or business operations.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Extensive experience with finance, budgeting, and financial forecasting/management, along with demonstrated knowledge of university and/or industry-based research and effective communication skills. Solid project management experience: ability to develop, monitor and evaluate multiple and complex projects with multiple deliverables and deadlines. Ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines. Ability to plan, organize and strategically lead the implementation of plans and processes to facilitate increased efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. Must be a strategic problem solver and effectively lead individuals in a dynamic and complex environment. Ability to work with and communicate effectively with others, demonstrate leadership, possess strong interpersonal skills and support the vision for the organization. Ability to communicate and interact with a high degree of professionalism with executive level personnel across the university. Proven experience in a business management role, with a special focus on executive-level advising and interdepartmental collaboration. Substantial depth of understanding and involving significant detail of each of these multiple unrelated processes/methods. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with budgeting, data analysis, project management and effective communication skills in order to perform the job duties that are required. This specialized knowledge is essential in order to work effectively with senior university management, EVPAA, Chancellors, President, faculty and staff. Ability to communicate and interact with a high degree of professionalism with executive level personnel is essential as well as the ability to understand and synthesize complex financial data, to provide leadership and effectively manage people and resources. Possess a nimble business mind with a focus on developing creative solutions.Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a higher education and/or public sector setting preferred.
