Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations for the Department of History within the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). Reporting to the Chair of the Department of History, the Director of Finance and Operations (Director) serves as the department's (and all affiliated programs) Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer and works with the faculty leadership and staff in developing and implementing the financial and administrative structure of the Department. The Director is responsible for the management of daily operations for a variety of business services including finance, budget, grant accounting, the administration of policies, personnel, space and facilities planning, grant administration, and purchasing in the areas of, but not limited to the SAS History Department, the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis, the High School Teacher Institute, the Center for British Students, Rutgers Oral History Archives, and the Modern Greek Studies Program.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides financial oversight and oversees the department's and program's financial services activities including but not limited to planning, budgeting, reconciliation, and stewardship of a $13.5M budget.
Provides financial advice and insight to the Chair, supervises the business operations of 7 full-time staff, and represents the Chair, program directors, and the department/programs on a variety of committees and workgroups.
In operations, the Director is responsible for all departmental/programmatic HR/Personnel functions, facilities management, and oversight of administering the undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
Works with the appropriate faculty committees on the financial aspects of space planning, facilities safety and security, allocating personnel space, and facilities planning.
Works independently within broadly defined objectives, performs professional work consistent with a comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP), and possesses an excellent understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology and applied accounting.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Business or Finance.
A minimum of five (5) years of senior management experience with budgeting and supervisory responsibility.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to think strategically, handle complex organizational detail, and negotiate and resolve conflict.
Excellent communication, data gathering/analysis, and presentation skills.
Possess strong computer skills and data base systems expertise.
Strong oral and written communication skills are extremely important.
Ability to creatively handle detailed work and multiple concurrent tasks is important.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Knowledge of the university's regulations, procedures, and policies are desired.
An advanced degree is preferred, but can be substituted with 8 years of increasingly responsible working experience within a university environment.
