The Staff Accountant is responsible for the ongoing management, accounting, and financial analysis of a portfolio of clinical trials as a member of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinical Trials Office post-award team. This includes developing a thorough knowledge of assigned studies through review of related study documents, budgets, and financial statements. The Staff Accountant will be expected to develop strong working relationships with both the D-H clinical research teams, as well as with sponsors, as the position will act as the main point of contact with stakeholders for assigned clinical trials. Additionally, the position shall work closely with the CTO Bill Review team, to reconcile patient bills charged to studies and review against budgeted amounts. This position must demonstrate the ability to question and investigate data anomalies and follow through to resolution, which is required to maintain and protect the integrity and accuracy of cost data and systems.
Reads study protocol synopsis and other related documents, as appropriate, as well as attends pre-activation meetings.
Reviews clinical billing charges on studies against the budget to ensure appropriate cost coverage of clinical billing determinations.
At award set-up, evaluates study documents (awarded proposals, contracts, agreements, subcontracts, Medicare Coverage Analysis, approved Informed Consents, and Internal Budgets) with the intent to develop through knowledge of the trial.
Sets up clinical trials in CTO’s excel-based Study Manager files, as well as in the D-H accounting software, PeopleSoft, for tracking of invoices, patient care cost, and administrative fees for revenue and expenses.
Monitors enrollments, patient milestones, invoiceable items, and screen failures against contracting and budget terms.
Partners with Budget and Contract contacts on budget amendments, when needed, to provide support for additional funds.
Prepares and/or oversees the preparation of financial statements.
Reviews a financial portfolio of clinical trials by performing and/or reviewing various study accounting activities.
Provides monthly account reconciliation and report generation.
Prepares journal entries with appropriate supporting analysis and backup for various activities and is responsible for reviewing and approving invoices for payment.
Bachelor’s (preferred) or Associate’s degree in Accounting/Business Administration or 3 years’ relevant experience, in healthcare preferred.
Required proficiency in data analysis and intermediate experience in Microsoft Excel.
Must be a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Effective organization and time management skills, with strong attention to detail.
Self-motivated, detail-orientated, able to work as part of a team as well as independently.
Strong conflict resolution/negotiations skills.
